Red Rock State Park, Sedona, Arizona. Not the iconic view shot while standing in the water of Oak Creek Crossing... Rather we walked into the meadow to the north and found a forested foreground we liked. Note: If you venture to Sedona seeking to shoot Cathedral Rock from the Crossing, make plans for an evening shoot. Yes, the park closes well before sundown and you may have to be creative, but the Cathedral will be front lit and your sky's behind will be darker. And if you go in the fall rainy season, you may be rewarded with some rainbow action.. A three exposure compilation. Canon 7D, 1/250 s, 1/125 s, 1/60 s @ f/10, ISO 100 EF70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM @ 70 mm.

'Montezuma's Castle...'
Really a must-see while in the Sedona area, this easy-to-access, native American wonder was so worth the side-trip.
About a half hour south of Sedona near Camp Verde, along Bever Creek, this National Monument (since 1906) is one of the best preserved Cliff Dwellings in North America. Built and used by the Pre-Columbian Sinagua people, It was occupied from approximately 1100-1425 AD, it's occupation peaking around 1300 AD. A sofisticated complex, the structure comprises 20 rooms on 5 levels (floors) and was likely occupied by about 50 people. Carved in the limestone cliff, the Sinagua were courageous builders - using primative tools for construction and accessing the entire site by ladders. We really do not know exactly why the Sinagua abandoned the complex, but their ancestors still live in the region. Several Hopi Clans trace their roots to the Sinagua and the Beaver Creek area. Neither part of the monument's name is correct. The Sinaqua dwelling was abandoned 100 years before Montezuma was born and the Dwellings were not a castle. It was more like a "prehistoric high rise apartment complex". ~ Paraphrased from Wikipedia

The sun breaks at Mesa Arch, Version II - Where few tread...
Our #1 'Bucket List' location... Yes, there's no shortage of images of this scene, here on SM or elsewhere. Every image has a different feel, season or perspective - but all are spectacular. But still, we needed our own view. I've long dreamed of standing here to photograph what is likely the most familiar southwestern sunrise view ever published. Red and I planned two mornings and two evenings in Moab, UT. to be sure we could visit Mesa Arch first in the daytime, to plan and scout our our sunrise return. Approximately a quarter-mile hike from the Islands in the Sky Mesa Arch trailhead in Canyonlands National Park, getting to the arch and staking claim to a decent tripod spot meant departing Moab at about 4:30 AM for a 7:00ish sunrise. We had read that some mornings, 40+ tripods are fighting for a view - when in reality, only about 3 spots provide a perfect perspective. We were early enough to claim one of those 3! So, for about an hour - with sunrise at the halfway point, we composed and bracket-shot about 450 images from which to work both single and HDR images. Shifting from our 10-20MM to our 24-70MM we went about feverishly capturing the ever changing scene. Funny thing though... we'd like to return and do this again - without a camera... and just soak it all in.
Viewed in 'Largest Size' you will see 'Washer Woman Arch.' She's the left of two formations rising from the valley floor - just left of image-center. A rock appearing as a woman wearing a long dress working her wash - facing the sun.. The arch is more visable of course, if viewed from further south (right) looking back northward (left.)

Some ask why the bottom of the arch glows so.. As the sunlight illuminates the red earth of the cliff below the arch and then bounces upward, it strikes the bottom of the arch and creates the mystical red/orange glow...
