(Unframed Version) April 18, 2012 - 'Larger than I..' New Orleans, Louisiana
Have been away for a few weeks, but now back with a new body of work from southern Louisiana - New Orleans and two plantations to the west along the Mississippi. After finishing initial edit I did something I'd never done before releasing a new portfolio and asked a good friend & photographer to critique a few hundred of my personal favorites in the series. She took time to thoughtfully evaluate each image and give honest feedback. As a result of that refinement (or double critique,) I've assembled a subset of the initial batch that comprises only those images we both felt were worthy of sharing.. So in honor of that gracious assistance, and in no particular order, I'll share a subset of those pickin's over the next days or weeks and say "Thank you!!" for the second set of eyes on a four day journey into 'The Big Easy..'

Three Bucks gets you a 'Jazzy Pass' and all day on and off the Cable Cars of New Orleans.. The Canal Street Line would be the backbone of the line as it connects uptown with the Mississippi at the Riverfront Line.. The Canal Street Line also intersects at St Charles Street with the St Charles Line that heads west to Carrollton passing through the Business District, Museum and Galleries, Garden District, Loyola and Tulane Universities.. The Cable Cars are an efficient way to see the entire New Orleans/riverfront/French Quarter to Carrollton area without Taxi or rental car engagement - You just need patience at busy times of the day as a lot of tourist types are on/off the lines at the transfer points of St Charles and Canal.
This image was shot at as the St Charles Line intersects for one block on Canal between the Carondelet loop and St. Charles Ave. The perspective gives the ability to shoot cars while they pass one another on Canal Street. The cars move slowly and come to their stops often along the tracks giving opportunity to capture the faces of passengers who'd likely rather be somewhere else at that moment.. Although unintentionally captured, the young child, pacifier firmly inserted, gazes upward at the Walgreen's neon monstrosity, off scene behind (we'll share that soon) as the car turns to head south on Canal.. The youngster actually 'made' the image work with that gaze of childlike amazement.
Hope you'll enjoy the series as we've made somewhat of a transition in photographic style as a result of this New Orleans trip.. The city is as much about the people who live and visit here as it is about the history, tradition, tragedy, architecture and oh yes, the cuisine. We just decided to break through that imaginary boundary that could be interpreted as invasion of privacy and shot people a lot more. People just doing their own thing. That's life In the Big Easy...
As always, please know we appreciate your comments. We learn from your work. This Daily group is a cool bunch of Photogs! We've occasionally stopped in to see your work even though we've not had the time to comment much.. Everyone is developing, growing and shifting styles over time. New folks are coming into the group... And we see your comments about the Red Thumb and dismiss the Snake as insignificant and petty.
Thanks to all..
